Not freezing, thick frost, or a power outage with a freezer full of food. We check the defrost system, the fan, and the compressor start parts.

Common Problems
Freezer Repair Services
Four problems come up again and again. Each one points to a short list of likely causes.
🧋 Freezer Not Freezing
The freezer runs, but food stays soft, or ice cream turns to soup.
Common causes: a dirty condenser coil, a failed condenser fan, a worn start relay or overload, a defrost failure that has iced over the evaporator, or a weak sealed system.
Check first: set the temperature to 0°F, close the door fully, and clear dust off the coils with the unit unplugged. In a hot garage, a freezer can’t keep up.
❄️ Freezer Not Cooling
The freezer feels warm, and it may be silent or running nonstop. A tripped GFCI, a failed start relay, a dead compressor, or a bad control board are the usual suspects. A fridge-freezer in an unheated garage during a cold snap can also let the freezer side warm up, since the fridge thermostat shuts the cooling off.
Check first: the outlet, the breaker, and any GFCI. Garage outlets trip often.
💧 Freezer Leaking
Water on the floor under or around a freezer comes from a few places.
A clogged defrost drain on a frost-free freezer: water backs up and runs out the front.
A leaking door gasket: warm air causes condensation and drips.
A chest freezer’s drain plug: meltwater from a manual defrost.
A water line to an ice maker: on a fridge-freezer combination.
Check first: clear any ice at the back of the freezer floor, and wipe the gasket dry. If water runs from a line, shut off the supply.
🔊 Freezer Making Noise
Some noise is normal. Popping and a faint hum are fine. These aren’t:
A squeal or chirp in an upright: a failing evaporator fan.
A rattle from the back: the condenser fan or a loose part.
Clicking every few minutes with no cooling: a start relay or compressor.
A thump or vibration: the freezer isn’t level, or ice is hitting the fan.
More Fixes
Freezer Problems We Fix
Freezer Too Cold
Food is freezing hard, or milk in the fridge side freezes. A stuck thermostat, a failed temperature sensor, or a control board fault are the usual causes. Check that the setting is at 0°F and a quick-freeze mode isn’t turned on.
Freezer Frost Buildup
On a frost-free model, heavy frost means the defrost system has failed, or the door isn’t sealing. A defrost heater, sensor, or control board is usually the fault. On a manual defrost chest freezer, a thin layer of frost is normal. Once it reaches about a quarter inch, defrost it. Don’t chip ice with a knife, since you can puncture a coil.
Freezer Not Running
No sound and no light points to power. Check the cord, the outlet, the breaker, and the GFCI. If the light works but the compressor won’t start, suspect a start relay, an overload, or a failed compressor. A surge after a storm can also take out the control board.
Freezer Door Not Sealing
A door that doesn’t seal lets in warm air, builds frost, and drives up the electric bill. Try the dollar bill test. Close the door on a bill, and if it slides out with no pull, the seal is weak. Causes are a torn or warped gasket, a sagging hinge, or an unlevel freezer. Upright freezers should sit level or tilt slightly back.
Freezer Overheating
The sides of some freezers get warm during normal use, since condenser lines run in the walls. A freezer that’s too hot to touch, smells like something burning, or runs nonstop is different. Dirty coils, a failed condenser fan, poor ventilation around the unit, or a hot garage are the usual causes. Unplug it if you smell burning, and call us.
