Common Problems
Microwave Repair Services
Four problems come up again and again. Each one points to a short list of likely causes.
🔥 Microwave Not Heating
If the light, fan and display work but a cup of water stays cool after a minute, the heating parts have failed. The usual causes are a failed magnetron, a bad high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a blown high-voltage fuse. All of these are inside the case, so don’t open it. We test the parts and compare the repair price with a new unit before you decide.
⏻ Microwave Not Turning On
A dead microwave may have a blown fuse, a failed door switch, a tripped thermal fuse or a bad control board. Check these first:
The outlet works. Over-the-range models usually plug in inside the cabinet above.
The breaker is on and no GFCI has tripped.
The door closes fully.
If all three are fine, call us.
🔄 Microwave Not Spinning
Check that the glass tray sits on the roller ring and the coupler. If both are in place and the plate still won’t turn, the turntable motor has likely failed. It is a small part on most models.
🔊 Microwave Making Noise
Grinding: a dirty roller ring or a worn turntable motor.
Loud hum or buzz: a cooling fan or the high-voltage parts.
Stop using it if the noise is new and loud, and call us.
More Fixes
Microwave Problems We Fix
Microwave Sparks
Metal inside the cavity, like foil or a gold-rimmed plate, causes most sparking. Burnt food on the waveguide cover does it too. Stop using it, remove any metal and wipe the cavity. If it still sparks with safe dishes, the cover or the cavity needs repair.
Door Won’t Close or Latch
The door and its safety switches keep microwave energy inside. Don’t run a microwave with a door that won’t latch or is bent. Unplug it and call us. Broken door hooks and a bent door are the usual faults.
Buttons or Display Not Working
A worn touchpad or a failed control board is the usual cause, and a power surge after a storm can damage the board. Unplug the microwave for a minute and plug it back in. If the buttons stay dead or the display stays dark with power on, we replace the touchpad or the board.
Microwave Overheating or Shutting Off
A blocked vent or a failed cooling fan is the usual cause, and the thermal fuse shuts the unit off to prevent damage. Over-the-range models also take heat from the stove below. Wipe grease off the vent grille and clean the filter. If it keeps shutting off, stop using it.
Smoke or a burning smell? Keep the door closed and unplug it if you can do so safely. If you see flames, call 911.
